Evelyn Swift Shuker
I am Evelyn Swift Shuker, a performance artist, director, and playwright in Philadelphia.
I've been considering ending my life for the last 11 years, and I'm trying to figure out if there is a path to a better world. Art should be a talisman that we hang around our necks to keep us moving when we are ready to surrender. It must see and understand the horror of being alive and offer hope and succor if any is possible, and witness if not. My work is a set of experiments towards that end. It is embodied vulnerability and intimacy, filtered through sex and abjection and transness. I aim to build a ladder into the pit, and a ladder goes both ways.
